Malta Permanent Residence Programme · For UK Citizens

Europe, Without
the 90 Day Limit

Since Brexit, British citizens may spend only 90 of every 180 days in the Schengen area. The Malta Permanent Residence Programme restores a permanent base in the European Union: live in Malta for as long as you wish, in English, under familiar rules, without giving up your life in the UK.

Why Malta

A European Base,
Without Pausing Life Elsewhere

Malta combines genuine EU access with a high standard of living and a route to permanence that fits internationally mobile families.

01

Beyond the 90/180 Rule

Permanent residency gives you the right to reside, settle and stay in Malta for as long as you wish. No more counting days for your Mediterranean base.

02

Permanent Status

The certificate grants the right to reside, settle and stay in Malta and does not expire, provided the programme conditions are maintained.

03

English Speaking, Familiar Rules

English is an official language of Malta. The islands drive on the left, follow a British influenced legal tradition and feel familiar from the first day.

04

Parents and Children Included

One application can cover your spouse, dependent children and qualifying parents and grandparents, so the whole family holds the same secure base.

05

World Class Healthcare

Permanent residents can access Malta's public and private healthcare, ranked among the strongest in the Mediterranean region.

06

Keep Your Life in the UK

There is no minimum stay after residency is granted, so you can keep your home, business and family ties in Britain while holding a permanent EU base.

What Brexit Took,
Malta Gives Back

From the 90/180 day rule to an English speaking life in the Mediterranean, the programme is structured around the questions British families ask first.

01

An Answer to the 90/180 Rule

As a Maltese permanent resident you can stay in Malta for as long as you wish. Time spent in Malta no longer consumes your Schengen allowance, which stays available in full for the rest of Europe.

02

Eligible Since Brexit

Brexit made British citizens third-country nationals, and that is exactly who the MPRP is designed for. What was lost by treaty can be restored by application, permanently.

03

Feels Familiar From Day One

English is an official language, contracts and schooling are available in English, the islands drive on the left and decades of shared history mean British residents settle in quickly.

04

Three Generations, One Plan

A single application can settle your spouse, children, parents and grandparents under the same residency, so the whole family shares one secure base in the sun.

05

Licensed, Not a Visa Agent

Your file is prepared and filed through licensed Maltese representation, with full confidentiality and no inflated promises of guaranteed approval.

06

Guided From the UK

The entire process is managed remotely from Britain, with travel to Malta needed only for biometrics and the steps that legally require your presence.

FAQ

Common
Questions

Considered answers to what families ask most. For anything specific to your circumstances, our advisors are a message away.

Yes. Since the United Kingdom left the EU, British citizens are third-country nationals and therefore eligible for the MPRP. The programme grants permanent residency in Malta and does not affect your British citizenship or passport.

In Malta, yes. As a permanent resident you may stay in Malta without any day limit, and time spent in Malta does not count against your Schengen allowance. Visits to other Schengen countries remain subject to the usual 90 days in any 180 day period.

The main applicant must be at least 18, a third-country national and able to pass the programme's due diligence standards. EU, EEA and Swiss nationals are not treated as third-country nationals for this programme.

The regulations set two paths: at least EUR 500,000 in assets with at least EUR 150,000 in financial assets, or at least EUR 650,000 in assets with at least EUR 75,000 in financial assets.

A qualifying owned or rented property must be held for at least five years from the appointed day. After that, a residential address in Malta or Gozo must still be maintained.

A single application can include your spouse, dependent children subject to the dependency criteria, and qualifying parents and grandparents. Included members receive the same residency status as the main applicant.

There is no minimum stay requirement. Once permanent residency is granted you may keep your life in the UK while holding a secure EU base, provided the qualifying property is maintained for the required period.

Holding Maltese residency does not by itself change your UK tax residence, which is determined by the Statutory Residence Test and your personal facts. Tax residence and any Maltese tax consequences are reviewed separately with qualified advisors before you commit.

The MPRP is an immigration status, not a work permit. Local employment may require separate authorisation. Business ownership and tax residence questions are reviewed separately.
